Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902) involved in the Hudson River School movement. He travel west starting in 1861. He painted from sketches made on trips. Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) was born in New York but moved to California. He photographed of Yosemite which influenced the United States Congress to preserve it as a National Park.
