Timothy O’Sullivan (1840 -1882)
Timothy O’Sullivan grew up in New York, a teenager he worked for Matthew Brady. In 1861, he was commissioned in the Union Arm as first lieutenant in the Civil War. He did survey work. He was discharged in 1862 and photographed the Civil War until Robert E. Lee’s surrender in 1865. He then worked for the US government and photographed the western US to encourage settlers under Clarence King and George Wheeler and even photographed Panama in relation to planned canal. After his travels he worked in Washington DC for US Geological Survey and the treasury department. He died in Stanton Island at age 42 due to tuberculosis.
