Ugly Mug

Photo taken at First Stitches in Pueblo

(First Stitches in Pueblo let me stage the photo of the mug)

I remember throwing this mug on the wheel, I wanted to make it twisted and off kilter and artistic, but it is not artistic and I didn't like the shape it became. I continued on and put on a handle glaze it. I didn't like the glazing either. Never the less, I do reach for this mug, it is comfortable, it holds enough coffee and fits in the cup holder in my vehicle. I brought my morning coffee in this ugly mug to visiting artist class with Justin Lambert. Justin is a world renown ceramic artist. Justin Lambert makes functional wood fired ceramic pottery with natural ash glaze. He gave a wonderful workshop demonstrating use of slip, wheel throwing, educating on kiln building and he happened to discuss handles. I showed him the ugly mug handle and he said that he liked my handle and if I could make a mug to go along with that handle I could sell it.
